To empower women and eliminate gender discrimination, WISE conducts a series of women and girl empowerment (WAGE) trainings.
Besides women, the trainings target men who have disempowered women. WISE believes that when women are empowered to be
rebellious, men don’t support it therefore target men to view the relevance of or importance of empowering women. They
then begin to appreciate the uniqueness and benefits of an empowered woman to grow and support the man.
The WAGE trainings cover a series of topics which include imparting leadership skills among women and girls. These
result into formation of self-help groups through which women including disadvantaged girls like young mothers are able
to make savings and access soft loans to improve their livelihoods.
During the WAGE trainings, people reflect on the issues affecting them in their communities, they then create their own
vision for a better future, commit to achieving it and outline the actions that are needed to succeed. Each participant
leaves the workshop with a specific project for the following three months or agriculture season based entirely on local
resources. As each week unfolds, the empowered girls and women get engaged in running various income generating
activities and begin to enjoy their earnings and become more respected by theirspouses and the community at large hence developing into self-confidence.
