The WISE community food project is designed to increase food security in the communities.
Through this project,
a number of groups have been established, comprised of women and men living in nearby localities
in the same village
of about 10-12 homes. These groups work together to improve the self-reliance of community
members over their food needs.
Through the groups, they are able to support each other during land preparation, planting,
weeding, storage, and marketing.
They have established food cribs and granaries where they store foods like maize, millet, beans,
groundnuts, cassava, and
dried potatoes for future use during drought.
WISE supports the communities by conducting food production and food security trainings that lay
emphasis on the application
of proper agronomic practices, post-harvest handling, food storage, and marketing.
The youth empowerment project mobilizes youth in groups and trains them to take on self-help
projects that equip them
with knowledge and skills to generate income.
So far, 8 drama groups have been established in various parts of the country. They conduct
plays, music, and drama through
which they sensitize communities on HIV/AIDS & Gender Inequality, child and maternal health, and
good water, sanitation,
and hygiene practices.
Through this, communities have adopted the use of tippy taps, drying racks, rubbish pits, and
women have established kitchen
gardens where they grow vegetables to feed their households and prevent common diseases caused
by poor hygiene.
