Establishing Mobile Clinics in Remote Areas: Remote Medical Care is a telemedicine service that allows
constant monitoring of the patient's condition and performance of preventive and control check-ups outside
medical facilities. This form of care is made possible by using mobile devices that measure vital signs.
Currently, there is only one main government-funded referral hospital, Busolwe hospital in Butaleja
district. This leaves the community at the mercy of a few unqualified health workers with limited knowledge
and equipment who are rendering services to the community. One such case is Mr. Awali of Kuwait village, who
owns a small room where he treats people for common diseases like malaria, typhoid, diarrhea, and others. He
has no means of transport and usually faces challenges whenever he is called upon in the village to attend
to someone who is too ill to move to his clinic.
The biggest challenge comes when he is required to refer patients with complicated cases like toothache,
hypertension, stomach ache, headache, eye problems, broken limbs, or women in labor or delivery to Busolwe
hospital, which is over 120km from his village.
To support health workers like Mr. Awali who are extending health services to the community amidst several
challenges, including lack of transport, information, medical equipment, and technical skills, WISE is
seeking partnerships with individuals, health practitioners, and other organizations.
